Join me on the Road to Easter
Lent Reflections #1 2026 from author Alison Lloyd
Today is the first day of Lent — the 40-day period before Easter. Is it a thing to wish people a happy Lent? I have the feeling it’s not, since Lent is a preparation time of fasting or going without. Anyway, if you are reading this, I’m glad you’ve joined me. Every day for 40 days, I’ll post a quote from Scripture, and a short reflection on it. The goal is to get closer to God — to see more of him, in the here and now.
“Abram went as the LORD told him.”
Genesis 12:4
Abram (Abraham) went. This is his response to God telling him out of the blue to leave his home, for a bright but unspecified future. Abram didn’t have Google Maps. He didn’t have a guidebook or TripAdvisor reviews to scroll through. He didn’t even have a paper map. He didn’t know where he was going, how long it would take, what the trip would be like, or where he would end up. He just went because God said so.
Why would you do that? Pack up your whole household and wander off without a plan? I don’t like not having a plan. I don’t like not knowing the results of the things I do. But God has the whole map, not just of our immediate surroundings, the physical world we live in, but of the entire universe, the heavens and the earth. He understands the topography of our hearts. He shapes the topography of history.
In a way, I think God is like Google Maps — only giving one direction, or one day, at a time. What he says in the Bible doesn’t answer every question that I have, but it’s enough. It’s enough for me to follow, to go as he tells me. I don’t always know where he is telling me to go, but I can start with this: set the compass of my heart to Him and His instruction.
So, here at the beginning of Lent, this is what I’m giving up: I surrender my requirement to be in control and know where I am going. May my heart swing around to find You.
