A beautiful article, Alison. One of my favourite things about travelling is seeing the different forms of traditional dress, thought a lot of it is becoming more homogenised through western influence.

I have a pair of earrings from Morocco, a vibrant purple scarf from Egypt. A baby carrier from mountains of Laos. It’s wonderful to be able to include other cultures in our daily lives. I agree. It adds, not diminishes, our experience as human beings

I love Indigenous earrings. I recently commissioned a gold ring with diamonds that shine like stars.

I love earrings too! I have a pair of Tibetan style earrings - though I got a relatively modest pair - Tibetan women wear some really large, dangly silver and turquoise creations.

I love silk clothes or scarves particularly because I can afford more silk scarves than clothes. I did have a beautiful silk dress when I married. I so regret not keeping it.

I bet you looked lovely! My mum married in silk too - a stylish 50's suit in moss green.

I was fascinated by this post! And totally envious of your ability to speak Chinese. I followed the free version of ChinesePod for quite a while a few years back and still retain a half dozen words of Mandarin. China is a place I dream of visiting, and I have a lot of respect for Chinese ingenuity and sense of beauty.

And I just love silk. Always have. I think Chinese traditional dress is very beautiful, and of course it is also very modest in comparison to contemporary Western dress. I am so tired of seeing lumps and bumps and boobs hanging out here in the UK! If I visited China I think I'd have to take an extra suitcase for the shopping.

Yes, the shopping was tempting! Not always cheaper than home but much more variety. Although the sizing is way off, by our measurements. When my trousers got a hole, I bought a pair of replacements that were size 4XL! They didn't have the next size down but really they're not far off a good fit - they'd be a size 10 (small-medium) here.
